About Julia Jakeman

Welcome!

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to learn a little about what I can offer you as a qualified integrative psychotherapist and counsellor.

My Background and Experience

My background is working in the fields of addiction rehabilitation and eating disorders as well as volunteering for many years on crisis helplines.

I also have lived experience of problematic alcohol consumption, stress and anxiety and recognise what it feels like to be a woman getting older in Western society.

My Therapeutic Approach

I approach therapy from a humanistic and relational stance believing that we always have the capacity to change and grow in positive ways.

I believe that the way we cope in our present-day lives is influenced by our past experiences and that going back into our childhood and examining these experiences, we may find clues as to where many of our coping mechanisms originate.

When we become aware of this it enables an opportunity to change these unhelpful patterns and find healthier, kinder ways of treating ourselves in our present day lives.

The Challenges We Face

Navigating our way through life is not always plain sailing, and at times, we may turn to unhelpful and self-destructive ways to see us through. Whether it is alcohol, drugs, bereavement, grief or ill-health and unhealthy relationships, we are trying to cope with deep unhappiness in the best way we can.

As we get older, those feelings and problematic behaviours can get stronger and take us to dark places. Talking about what we are going through is the first step to breaking free and finding healthier ways of coping.

Areas I Work With

I work across all ranges of mental health issues and recognise the hopelessness we may feel when we think we have little value to give anymore.

I also work in couples counselling to explore what is leading to a breakdown in that relationship and have worked extensively in the field of grief and cancer diagnosis

If you feel I might be the right therapist for you,
please don't hesitate to reach out.
